The retina is responsible for sensing light. It is made of individual nerve fibers that come together to form the optic nerve. The optic nerve connects the eyeball to the brain. The part of the optic nerve that is visible on exam is the optic nerve head. The central depression in the optic nerve is called the optic cup. The optic cup is an area of the optic nerve where there aren't nerve fibers. If the patient loses retinal nerve fibers, the density of the fibers will decrease and the optic cup will enlarge. Glaucoma is damage to the optic nerve and the patients have enlarged optic cups.
